[ARCHIVED] IHB Railroad Crossing Closures

The Village would like to advise residents to be aware that the Indiana Harbor Belt (IHB) Railroad plans to perform maintenance on the Cossitt Avenue and Lincoln Avenue railroad crossings. Work will include the removal and replacement of the asphalt pavement at the railroad tracks in order to provide a smoother crossing. The complete closure of the crossing will be required for several days while the work is completed. The IHB has provided us with the following schedule for their work:

Lincoln Ave. Crossing – Closed from June 7th to June 11th

Cossitt Ave. Crossing – Closed from June 14th to June 18th

As noted in the above schedule, only one of the crossings will be closed at a time so that the other crossing will be available for the detour route. While the Lincoln Avenue crossing is under construction, vehicles will be detoured to the Cossitt Avenue crossing just south of the intersection via Sawyer Avenue and Tilden Avenue. Conversely, when the Cossitt Avenue crossing is closed, vehicles will be routed to the Lincoln Avenue crossing. Signs will be posted in the area designating the detour route for motorists. Should weather delay the project, the closure would occur on a subsequent day.

Please also note that a new State law became effective January 1, 2010, regulating the use of cell phones. When driving through a construction zone, cell phone use is limited to hands-free operation only and texting is strictly prohibited. The La Grange Police Department will be enforcing this new law.

If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Mr. Mike Bojovic, Assistant Director of Public Works at (708) 579-2328.
