[ARCHIVED] Mosquito Control Measures

The Des Plaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District has notified the Village that it has commenced with treatment operations for the 2011 mosquito season including continued testing for the presence of the West Nile Virus. Their principal means of controlling mosquitoes is to eradicate new larva. This is accomplished by applying chemical agents directly in areas of open water sources, such as large ponds and catch basins.

If necessary, the District may utilize spraying as a means to control adult mosquito populations. Please note that the Village only receives about a 24 hour advance notice on spraying, however the Des Plaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District provides a website for residents to check on adult mosquito control plans.Des Plaines Valley.

The District also posts a recorded message after 3:30 p.m. on their main phone line (708/447-1765) which residents can call to see if any adult control operations are planned for that evening.

La Grange residents are asked to help prevent mosquito breeding by eliminating standing water wherever possible. This may be accomplished by maintaining rain gutters and downspouts to prevent water retention in gutters; changing water in bird baths on a weekly basis; maintaining swimming pools (residents are encouraged to report any unmaintained pools); change water in children’s wading pools at least once a week; screen rain barrels to prevent adult mosquitoes from depositing eggs on the water’s surface; properly disposing used tires for residents with four or fewer tires to dispose of, contact the District for assistance); aerate ornamental ponds and stock with goldfish or other surface-feeding fish which would feed on mosquito larva; and by removing containers which may accumulate water.

For more information visit the Des Plaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District website or contact them directly by telephone at (708) 447-1765.
