[ARCHIVED] La Grange Warns Residents of Electric Aggregation Predatory Marketing Practices

Residents were asked on the November 6, 2012 ballot whether or not the Village should implement an electrical aggregation program and pursue bids for alternative electric suppliers on behalf of the community. The referendum did pass by a margin of 65% (4,301 to 2,276) and the Village is in the process of developing the program according to the statutory requirements. Pursuant to the attached timeline, specific information regarding the chosen electriity supplier and opt-out instructions are not expected to be available until March, 2013.

Therefore, the Village does not currently have an electric aggregation program in place and has not selected an electric aggregation supplier at this time. No person or company has been authorized by the Village to solicit Village residents regarding electrical aggregation or electricity suppliers.

Residents are asked to be aware of door-to-door electric aggregation sales by companies offering deals on electric rates, or suggesting that they are representing the Village’s electric aggregation program. Door-to-door solicitors must have a permit and a badge issued by the Village. If you are visited by a door-to door solicitor regarding electric aggregation or changing your electric service, and that person does not have a permit and badge issued by the Village, please contact the Police Department non-emergency number at (708) 579-2333.

Residents may also be contacted by misleading telephone solicitors asking for enrollment confirmation information regarding a Village sponsored electric aggregation plan or other personal account information. As the Village has not selected an electric aggregation supplier at this time, no solicitor is authorized to contact residents on behalf of the Village, and residents should be wary of, and disregard, any claims from a caller saying that they represent the Village or are confirming enrollment in a Village program.

Complaints regarding tactics by electric power providers may be filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission Consumer Services Division by phone (800) 524-0795 or on-line at www.icc.illinois.gov or with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office at (800) 243-0618 or on-line at attorneygeneral.gov.

For more information regarding Municipal Electric Aggregation, please visit the Village’s website at:www.villageoflagrange.com/aggregation.
