[ARCHIVED] BNSF and Metra Announce Track Repair / Tie Replacement Project

A major tie replacement and track resurfacing project on Metra’s BNSF line from Chicago to Aurora has been announced by the BNSF Railway.

The project will include the replacement of 20,000 ties and the resurfacing of 17 miles of track. Work began last week near downtown Chicago and crews are proceeding west to Hinsdale.

Crews will be working six days a week with most of the work occurring during the hours of 8 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Although the work was tentatively scheduled to impact La Grange starting on April 24, BNSF reports that the likely start date will be on or about April 28. The work through La Grange is projected to take two days to complete.

BNSF has advised that the equipment used to perform the work will be disruptive and noisy. Trains passing through the construction area will also be sounding their horn in order to alert work crews.

The work will also require temporary crossing closures, most of which are anticipated to occur overnight. Please adhere to closure information and detour routes as provided.

Train schedules have also been adjusted to accommodate the work. Some midday and evening trains are expected to experience delays with minimal impact to rush hour trains.
