[ARCHIVED] County Announces Precautions and Procedures Related to West Nile Virus

The Cook County Department of Public Health encourages residents to take precautions to avoid mosquitos and potential exposure to West Nile Virus.

To reduce exposure, avoid being outdoors when mosquitos are most active, especially between dusk and dawn. Make sure that doors and windows have tight-fitting screens, and repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Eliminate all sources of standing water where mosquitos can breed, including flowerpots, wading pools, old tires and any other receptacles. Change water in bird baths weekly. More tips for reducing mosquitos in your yard is available on the Village's website.

Cook County will begin collecting and submitting dead birds for West Nile Virus testing for the 2014 season. Residents can report a dead bird by calling the Des Plaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District at 708-447-1765 or by reporting electronically at

Perching birds (Crows, Blue Jays, Grackles, Robins, Cardinals, Sparrows, Starlings, Finch) are the only birds being collected. Crows should be at least 10" - 12 " long.

Please visit the Village website and the Cook County Department of Public Health website for more information regarding reducing exposure to mosquitos and West Nile Virus.
