Since May, the Village and School District 204 have been studying ways to improve traffic and pedestrian safety around the north campus of Lyons Township High School. A professional traffic engineering firm was hired to review the existing vehicular and pedestrian traffic surrounding the school, review existing school operations, and make recommendations for improvements based on these observations, best practices, and engineering judgment. A copy of the study is available on the Village’s website click here.
On September 14, the Village Board received comments and discussed the recommendations related to this study. As a first step towards improving pedestrian safety, the Village Board approved the installation of a three-way stop at the intersection of Cossitt Avenue and Park Avenue, and the installation of a four-way stop at the intersection of Elm Avenue and Park Avenue. The purpose is to create an all way stop condition at these intersections as they are immediately adjacent to the school and experience a significant volume of pedestrian traffic. Additionally, in-street pedestrian barricades will be installed at the uncontrolled pedestrian crossings on Cossitt Avenue between Brainard Avenue and Park Avenue, as well as at Brainard Avenue and Elm Avenue.
Please be aware of the new stop signs and pavement markings at these two intersections. Installation is expected to occur within the next week.
As the next step, the Village, School District 204 and other interested stakeholders will be meeting to discuss other possible traffic and pedestrian safety improvements. We expect that these meetings will take place over the next several months.
