The Des Plaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District has advised the Village that in response to a growing adult mosquito population, the District will continue to employ larval and adult mosquito control efforts (spraying) as well as test for the presence of the West Nile Virus and other viruses.
Spraying for adult mosquitoes will be conducted during evening hours between dusk and midnight as needed. The Village typically receives notice of spraying activity approximately 24 hours in advance and will advise residents accordingly. The District lists all areas to be sprayed on a particular evening on its website and posts a recorded message after 3:30 p.m. on their main phone line (708/447-1765) which residents can call to see if any adult control operations are planned for that evening.
La Grange residents are asked to help prevent mosquito breeding by eliminating standing water wherever possible. This may be accomplished by maintaining rain gutters and downspouts to prevent water retention in gutters; changing water in bird baths on a weekly basis; maintaining swimming pools (residents are encouraged to report any unmaintained pools); changing water in children’s wading pools at least once a week; screen rain barrels to prevent adult mosquitoes from depositing eggs on the water’s surface; properly disposing used tires for residents with four or fewer tires to dispose of, contact the District for assistance); aerate ornamental ponds and stock with goldfish or other surface-feeding fish which would feed on mosquito larva; and by removing containers which may accumulate water.
