The Indiana Harbor Belt (IHB) Railroad plans to replace the deteriorated railroad crossings at East Avenue and 47th Street. Work will include the removal and replacement of the asphalt pavement with a new rubberized crossing at the railroad tracks in order to provide for a smoother crossing.
The tentative work schedule (weather permitting) is as follows:
East Avenue Railroad Crossing - completely closed from Monday, September 19 to Friday, September 30.
47th Street Railroad Crossing - completely closed from Monday, October 3 to Friday, October 14.
Signs will be posted in the area alerting motorists of the crossing closures. Traffic delays and back-ups are likely to occur. We recommend that motorists use alternate routes such as 55th Street, La Grange Road, Ogden Avenue, 47th Street and East Avenue depending on which crossing is closed. Please do not use neighborhood streets to avoid the intersection. Allow for additional time to account for these anticipated delays and let employees and delivery companies know of the work.
