Alert From Cook County Animal Control |
On June 27, 2018, a bat was found in the vicinity of the 0-100 block of Drexel Avenue. It was submitted for a rabies examination and was determined to be rabid by the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory. If you were exposed to or bitten by a bat, contact your doctor.
It is recommended that residents keep their animals on a leash when out of the home. If your animal does not have a current rabies vaccination, have the pet immediately inoculated with a rabies vaccine.
While no other cases of a similar nature have been reported to the Village, the County advises that bats testing positive for rabies is a common occurrence. Cases can increase through the summer months especially with more rain as mosquitos infect them.
You are advised not to handle any bats, skunks, or other wild animals. If any bats or skunks are found down or dead on your property or roadway, please call the Cook County Department of Animal Control at 708-974-6140. |
