Posted on: August 28, 2018[ARCHIVED] Lyons Township High School & Village Collaborate on Student Resource Officer at North Campus
Lyons Township High School District 204 and the Village of La Grange have collaborated on the assignment of a full time student resource officer on school days and certain events at North Campus. The District and Village will share the cost of an officer during the school year.
“Having a full-time student resource officer on campus takes immediacy, preparedness and responsiveness to a whole new level,” said Superintendent Dr. Tim Kilrea. “LT and the La Grange Police Department have always had a very collaborative and cooperative relationship. Dedicating an officer on a full time basis to LT North Campus has been considered and discussed for years, and to see this position come to fruition will be a huge asset for our students, staff and families.”
Tom Livingston, President of the Village of La Grange said, “The Village and Police Department support the assignment of a full time school resource officer at LT North, a vital position that not only serves the school but the community at large. The assignment will enhance our continued joint efforts to provide a safe and nurturing community for our residents and students.”
La Grange Police Officer Tim Andries has been selected for the SRO assignment at North Campus. Officer Andries has been with the La Grange Police Department for six years, where he has served as a Patrol Officer, an Investigator and a DARE Officer.
Prior to joining the La Grange Police Department, Officer Andries served in the United States Army reaching the rank of Captain. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 where he oversaw the daily operations of a Tactical Operations Center. Officer Andries graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation Administration and a minor in Military Science.
The SRO’s role includes investigations, serving as a liaison between the school and police agencies, and assisting staff with security measures and students and parents with juvenile law issues. The SRO is specifically trained and addresses situations proactively, often dealing with pressures that confront today's students, including the use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco, along with peer pressure and bullying. The liaison officer does more than patrol the school - students learn to trust the officer through their experiences, which has a positive impact on the students and their communities.
Officer Andries will work together with his counterpart at South Campus, Western Springs Police Officer Ashlee Niezgoda.
