On October 18, 2010, the Village hosted a public meeting concerning the sewer system of La Grange.
The presentation included detailed information about how the Village's sewer system is configured and operates; its relationship to the Deep Tunnel; on-going system maintenance activities; findings from investigation work after the July 24, 2010 severe weather event; and planning studies and long range capital improvements. The information provided included a presentation from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District on topics such as the Deep Tunnel, TARP, local sewer system interface and Stickney Plant.
Also at the meeting, Village officials discussed private property facilities and issues including seepage, backflow and other control measures which homeowners can undertake to protect their property. These measures include preventing infiltration, sewer back-up control methods and rear yard drainage and dissipation systems.

As a result of the investigative work performed by the Village, it was determined that the flooding experienced by residents was not due to operational or maintenance issues with the sewer system. Rather, the severity and frequency of the rain events exceeded the limited capacity of the system.
Future projects to increase conveyance and storage capacity within the sewer system are being planned. The Village will be preparing a cost estimate for several location-specific neighborhood projects, and a cost estimate and budget for long range capital improvements. Both sets of projects will be reviewed in detail as a part of the FY 2011-12 budget development process in January, 2011. Details regarding the meeting will be announced in the future.
