Earlier this morning, the La Grange Police Department responded to a report of a person struck by a train at the Cossitt Avenue Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad Crossing.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a female subject walked around the crossing gates while a freight train was approaching southbound on the east railroad track.  The female subject had been walking eastbound on the south side of Cossitt Avenue prior to the accident.  The freight train was traveling at approximately 30 miles per hour when the collision occurred.  The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.  Witnesses stated that the crossing gates were down and functioning properly at the time of the accident.

The accident investigation is ongoing and at this time the Police Department is not releasing the victim's name pending formal notification to family members.
