[ARCHIVED] Severe Weather and Flooding Update

La Grange

A significant rain storm impacted the Chicagoland region on Sunday, May 18, 2020 resulting in surcharged sewers, overtopped streambanks and flooding. Locally in La Grange, approximately 4.23 inches of rain fell from Saturday, May 16 at 10:00 pm to Sunday, May 17 at 11:30 pm. This is in addition to the 2.18 inches of rain that saturated the region over the prior two days on Thursday, May 14 and Friday, May 15. This rain storm exceeded the capacity of La Grange’s sewer system, resulting in flooded streets, basements and other low lying areas.

If you experienced flooding, please complete the on-line Flooding Event Form. The Village is compiling a list of flood related concerns by address and will be responding to residents that request follow up information. The process of following up with individual homeowners may take some time due to the number or residents impacted by the storm.

Flood damaged items will be collected on your regular refuse pick-up day and do not require stickers.  Please continue to sticker your regular household refuse and non-flood damaged items to ensure that they are picked up.  If you require additional services, please contact Republic Services directly at 708-345-7050.  For information about cleaning your home following a flooding event please follow guidance provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health

The Village also provides information for residents regarding how to prevent a sewer backup on its website.  The first step is to have a qualified, experienced plumber who can inspect your basement and provide recommendations based on your plumbing system. For combined sewer backups, homeowners may consider installing overhead sewer systems.  A licensed contractor and permits are required for this work.  Please note the Village will waive homeowner permit fees for flood mitigation projects.

We are continuing to work closely with the MWRD in an effort to reduce flooding in La Grange.

If you have any questions, please contact Public Works at (708) 579-2328.
