UPDATE: The planned demonstration in La Grange of Lyons Township High School students took place peacefully earlier today and had approximately 250 attendees.
The Village has been made aware of a planned peaceful demonstration today from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in La Grange. The event organizers are local teens who attend Lyons Township High School. The demonstration will begin at Village Hall and then head west on Harris, north on Ashland and west on Burlington Avenue to the Brainard Avenue Parking Lot. La Grange Road will be closed between Harris and Cossitt on La Grange Road if necessary and intermittent streets along the route will be temporarily closed to accommodate the demonstrators. Parking for the demonstration is at the parking lot west of the intersection of Brainard and Burlington Avenue. Level two and three of the downtown parking structure will be closed.
The La Grange Police Department is working closely with event organizers and local partner agencies. We expect this will be a peaceful gathering and respect the right for people to peaceably assemble, but remind all participants that unlawful behavior will not be tolerated. Police will continue to have a heightened presence throughout the community.
Since the event may draw larger than typical crowds to the downtown area, and to ensure the health and safety of all event participants and other visitors, the Village is recommending that businesses suspend outdoor operations from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., including bringing in any outdoor furniture.
