On Tuesday, January 25, the Village Board met to discuss potential safety related improvements within the 47th Street corridor. The improvements included a proposal to reconfigure 47th Street from a four-lane cross-section to a three-lane cross-section; and a proposal to signalize the intersection of 47th Street and East Avenue. In addition to these matters, the Village Board also discussed the effectiveness of the enhanced pedestrian crossing at 47th and 9th Avenue, and whether a similar upgrade should be installed at 47th and Waiola Avenue. Discussion regarding two other matters, the use of in-pavement pedestrian crossing signs and a Village-wide stop sign study, was postponed until the Capital Projects Workshop scheduled for February 7.
After significant discussion and public comment, the consensus of the Village Board was as follows:
1. Continue to pursue the signalization of 47th Street and East Avenue by providing copies of the KLOA study to IDOT and neighboring communities as a first step in the process.
2. Table additional discussion regarding the re-configuration of 47th Street from a four-lane cross-section to a three-lane cross-section, but continue to invite the public to provide input regarding the proposed project by e-mail at cbenjamin@villageoflagrange.com or regular mail.
3. Continue to pursue an enhanced pedestrian crossing at 47th Street and Waiola Avenue as well as La Grange Road and 52nd Street by inviting additional public input and discussing the project in conjunction with the Capital Projects workshop in February and Budget Workshop in March.
