Dear Resident -
The senseless and tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis has sparked a world-wide call to action through the Black Lives Matter movement. The actions of the police officer criminally charged with his death, and the inaction of several other officers while George Floyd called for help is incomprehensible.
I speak for the entire Village Board, staff and every member of the La Grange Police Department that we are all angered, shocked and saddened by what occurred. No member of the Village Board, staff or Police Department condones racism or police brutality in any form.
In La Grange, our Police Department has a commitment to serving every member of our community with integrity, professionalism and equity – no matter their race, religion, orientation or housing status. We are a community of families, neighbors and friends that care for each other, regardless of our differences.
For decades, the Village and Police Department have worked in partnership with the La Grange CommUNITY Diversity Group to discuss opportunities to strengthen community relationships, and enhance awareness that all humanity belongs to one family, to fight prejudice wherever it is found, and to assure that all persons have equal opportunities regardless of their race.
Each year, the Village Board passes a Proclamation affirming these tenets and supporting the annual Race Unity Rally in La Grange – this year will be the 29th year.
In addition to these actions, we have ensured that our Police Department consists of men and women committed to ensuring the upmost integrity, fairness and highest respect for all residents. Police Officers are regularly trained on cultural competency, de-escalation tactics, crisis intervention, procedural justice, civil rights and use of force.
In 2018, the La Grange Police Department adopted the 10-Shared Principals which affirms the relationship between law enforcement and the people that they serve. The principals underscore the value of each person and that all people should be treated with dignity and respect and endorse the four pillars of procedural justice, community policing, relationship building and diversity.
Last week, two inclusive and peaceful demonstrations were held in La Grange with messages that racism and injustice have no place in our society. Organizers worked together with our Police Department to ensure the safety of all participants.
