During the winter, Public Works crews work diligently to keep Village streets, sidewalks, and parking lots clear of snow and ice, and safe for travel. Please read the following reminders regarding the Village's snow and ice control program to help Public Works and keep our community safe throughout the winter season:
Plowing Operations
Roadways with the most traffic (La Grange Road, Ogden Avenue and 47th Street) are treated first followed by local residential streets and parking lots. The Village also has separate crews that maintain sidewalks in the Central Business District and train stations. In heavy snow events, the Village will haul snow from the Central Business District in order to maintain parking, sidewalks and safe driving areas.
When On-Street Parking is Prohibited
To assist the department with snow plowing operations, please be aware that on-street parking is prohibited when snowfall exceeds two or more inches. Also, on-street parking is prohibited overnight between the hours of 2 am to 6 am.
Driveways
Driveways are often impacted by snow removal. Please remember when shoveling or blowing snow from your driveway to place the snow in the parkway as much as possible. Unfortunately, we are unable to avoid snow from depositing into recently plowed driveways when the snow plow passes. If you employ a private snow plowing contractor, please remind them that plowing and piling snow across the street and/or on adjacent properties is not permitted.
Garbage Service / Trash Cans
The private waste hauler for the Village will normally pick up garbage during snow events. However, please be sure to place your trash can away from the curb while snow plowing is occurring to prevent the garbage can from accidentally being tipped over.
Help Us by Clearing Your Sidewalks
The Village requests that residents assist the Village and their neighbors by clearing public sidewalks adjacent to their property. Also, if there is a fire hydrant next to your property, the Fire Department requests your help by maintaining a three foot perimeter clear of snow around the fire hydrant.
