The Village would like to advise the public that the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) plans to repair the deteriorated railroad crossings at Brainard Avenue. Work will include the replacement of sections of rail at each crossing. A complete closure of the crossing to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be required to complete this work.
A complete closure of the crossing will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2022 through 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2022.
Signs will be posted in the area alerting motorists and pedestrians of the crossing closure in advance. All motorists, commuters, and students will be detoured to alternate crossings which include Kensington Avenue, Ashland Avenue, or La Grange Road crossings to the east or the Gilbert Avenue crossing to the west. Traffic delays and back-ups are anticipated. Please allow for additional time to account for these delays.
BNSF will have safety personnel on site from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays during the closure. Residents and businesses may experience a temporary increase in noise levels associated with railroad equipment performing the necessary work as well as from passing trains, as the trains are required to whistle while passing through the work area.
Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation. BNSF had planned to complete this repair during the summer months, but was unable to do so due to labor strikes impacting material availability.
The Village will work with the BNSF as much as possible to minimize the inconveniences associated with this project. BNSF will work as quickly as possible to complete the work in order to minimize the overall duration of the project. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Department of Public Works at (708) 579-2328.
