[ARCHIVED] Tips to Avoid Exposure to Mosquitos

Mosquito

Due to current weather conditions, there has been an increase in West Nile Virus vector mosquitoes and virus amplification to the level where transmission to humans is likely. Current weather trends are expected to continue the high population and further amplification, as reported in a Desplaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District (DVMAD) press release. If you find a dead bird, please report it to the Cook County Department of Public Health via this link or by calling 708-633-8025.

Spraying for adult mosquitoes will be conducted during evening hours between dusk and midnight as needed in the specific areas. The DVMAD lists all areas to be sprayed on a particular evening on its website, on a recorded message available after 3:30 p.m. at 708-447-1765, and on its Facebook page.

Residents are encouraged to use a commonsense approach in avoiding exposure to mosquitos. To prevent mosquitos from entering the home any damaged window screens, openings around window air conditioners or clothes dryer vents should be repaired or eliminated. If possible, limit outdoor activity at dusk, and wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Loose-fitting, light-colored clothing is best. Appropriate use of insect repellents per manufacturer’s instructions is recommended.

Individuals should look for potential mosquito breeding sources around the home and take the following simple steps:

  • Throw away all trash that can hold water such as cans, jars, bottles, etc.
  • Clean rain gutters/downspouts to prevent water from standing in gutters or on flat roofs.
  • Change water in bird baths, wading pools, etc. at least once a week.
  • Maintain swimming pools properly.
  • Remove or turn over containers, buckets, wheelbarrows, etc. which may accumulate water.
  • Screen rain barrels to prevent adult mosquitoes from depositing eggs on the water’s surface.
  • Aerate ornamental ponds and stock with goldfish or other surface-feeding fish to control mosquito production.

Please visit the Illinois Department of Public Health website, the Desplaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District website, or the Village website for more information.
